Chet Gordon

Born: ?
Died: ?
AKA: ?
Labels: US (Chicago)

Chet Gordon is a name that appears extremely frequently on the US label from 1919 or 1920 until 1922, credited with both solo performances and duets with many other US artists, most frequently Mary Brown and Paul Parnell (Paul Pratt).

Collector Ed Sprankle seems to have believed this was a pseudonym of Clarence Johnson - I cannot see any musical evidence for this, the styles seem to be completely different.

From an incomplete search the last Gordon roll I can find is May 1922, 'Muscle Shoals Blues'. He seems to have been much less active during 1922 than previous years.

No results in ancestry.com for either Chet or Chester Gordon, however in 1923 a copyright entry as follows:

YOU'VE GOT A HEART LIKE A ROCK CAST IN THE SEA; words and melody by Chet Gordon (of US), Chicago. June 9, 1923; E 562912; Lloyd Smith, Chicago.

This suggests he was indeed a real person.
